What to Expect at Your First Musical Theatre Audition
Before the audition
Read the information carefully: It should say what to prepare: a song, a monologue, or both. More often than not, the casting director will send across all the material you need to prepare. This includes the lyrics or sheet music along with the backing track. They will also send across any ‘sides’ you will need to learn before the audition.
Dress comfortably: Wear something neat that you can move in. Dance shoes if requested; avoid costumes.
Warm up: Do some gentle vocal warm-ups and stretches before you go.
When you arrive
Sign in: Write your name, age, and sometimes your song choice on a list. Many auditions will require you to fill out paperwork before you attend the audition and bring with you on the day, along with a headshot attached.
Wait: You’ll wait in a holding area until your name is called. Bring water and something quiet to do (a book or sketchpad).
Parents: Often parents wait outside or in a separate area; kids usually go in on their own.
In the audition room
Slate: You might introduce yourself: “Hi, my name is _____, I’m __ years old, and I’ll be singing ___.”
You may be attending a workshop audition with other auditionees, in which case you’ll be guided by someone in the room while the panel watches. You may begin with a group dance call, acting audition or song.
Sing & perform: Focus on telling the story of the song, not just hitting the notes. Use expressions, gestures, and eye contact — the team wants to see personality!
Sometimes:
They might ask you to sing another song, read lines (a “cold read”), or try something a different way.
After the audition
Say thank you and leave the room confidently.
Most casting teams don’t give feedback right away. If you’re invited to a recall, you’ll hear later.
Celebrate that you showed up and performed - that’s a huge accomplishment!
Tips to feel confident
✨ Practice your song with a pianist or karaoke track.
✨ Pick a spot on the wall above the audition panel’s heads to focus your performance.
✨ Remember: the casting team wants you to do well!
🌟 Reminder for parents:
Keep it positive, relaxed, and fun - your child’s confidence grows with each audition, no matter the result.
Bring updated headshots and CV’s.
